Rare complex laparoscopic surgery performed 1st time in J&K at GMC Srinagar

SRINAGAR, July 2: GMC Srinagar has set up a new benchmark by performing successfully maiden laparoscopic Whipple’s Pancreatoduodenectomy procedure in the union territory on a 50-year-old male patient suffering with pancreatic cancer.
Bhat Ghulam Hassan, a resident of Harwan was admitted to the emergency department of General and Minimal Access Surgery, GMC Srinagar and Surgical Unit-6 as a case of acute cholangitis with recent onset diabetes mellitus. Upon in-hospital evaluation and management, he was diagnosed as a case of pancreatic cancer involving head, neck and body of pancreas.
The tumour had caused in patient acute cholangitis with severe jaundice. ERCP and stenting was done by Department of Gastroenterology (Super-Speciality Hospital) and post-ERCP urgent surgery was advised.
This type of tumour is usually managed by open method requiring large laparotomy incisions, however in this case this procedure was performed by total laparoscopic method using 4-5 small holes in abdomen. It was a very complex and demanding procedure which is performed only in few centres in our country and was performed first time in UT of J&K.
Prof (Dr) M R Attri, the chief operating surgeon in this case, who has a vast experience of over 25 years in advanced laparoscopy and has done many such challenging cases in past as well, took up this challenge head on so that the laparotomy related complications may be avoided. The anesthesia team responsible for pre-anaesthetic check up, optimisation, anesthesia and post-operative intensive care was under the able guidance of Prof (Dr) Rukhsana Najeeb, Professor and Head Anaesthesiology and Critical Care GMC Srinagar.
The procedure lasted for 6.5 hours and intra-operative period was uneventful. The patient is recovering well and is out of intensive care now.
The operative team was comprised of Prof (Dr) M R Attri, Professor and Head of Surgical Unit-6 in the Department of General and Minimal Access Surgery (GMC Srinagar) as lead operating surgeon, Dr G M Naikoo, Assistant Professor, Dr Yassar Arafat and Dr Tauseef Arjum, both senior residents assisted the case. The resident post-graduates actively involved in this case were Dr Sartaj, Dr Arif and Dr Adan. The chief anesthetists on table were Dr Nusrat, Associate Professor and Dr Ruhi, Consultant Anaesthesia.
Commenting on the achievement, Principal GMS Srinagar Prof (Dr) Samia Rashid said that it is their endeavour to provide world class health services to the people of the UT so that they do not have to travel outside J&K for such ailments. She lauded the team of doctors including HoD Surgery Prof (Dr) Mufti Mehmood, Prof (Dr) Mushtaq Chalkoo and Dr Muhammad Afzal for successful outcome of the procedure.
