JAMMU, Oct 1: Expressing anguish and dismay over disallowing the resolution seeking safeguard to Article 35-A of the Constitution unilaterally by the Speaker Legislative Assembly, who is supposed to be non-partisan, Provincial President National Conference and MLA Devender Singh Rana today described it as a deep-rooted conspiracy of the BJP to weaken the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, especially the law on domicile.
“PDP and BJP are complimentary and supplementary to each other to repeal this constitutional guarantee, which is a legitimate provision to preserve the rights of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh”, Mr Rana said in a statement this evening.
Mr Rana had submitted the resolution seeking the State Government to resolve that all effective legal, political and administrative steps would be taken to ensure that Article 35A, as enshrined in the Constitution of India, upholding the unique status of the Permanent Residents of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Special Status of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, is not compromised in the context and form that it exists as of today.
By summarily disallowing the resolution, the BJP has made its clandestine anti-people and anti Jammu and Kashmir attitude known, he said while adding that the Coalition Government should not nurture any impression that by sabotaging the resolution, the game is over. “We will fight it tooth and nail and foil any attempt to weaken this provision of the Constitution”, Mr Rana asserted.
Mr Rana condemned the misinformation campaign unleashed by the BJP over Article 35-A with covert support of its coalition partner PDP, saying the duo even lacked basic knowledge about the Indian Constitution, which has guaranteed special provisions to various states of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, as per urges and aspirations of the people.
He asked those whipping up passions over this issue and further alienating the people of Jammu and Kashmir from national mainstream to have indepth study of the Constitution of India and get updated how other parts of the country like Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Andhra Pradesh, Goa etc enjoyed special and unique status as per various sub sections (A to G) of Article 371.
Mr Rana lamented that Jammu and Kashmir was being singled out just to satiate the communal agenda of BJP. “In this unholy pursuit, the PDP had volunteered to be a facilitator in order to repeal the Article 35A”, he said and cautioned that National Conference will not allow it to happen, as it will mean trampling of the constitutional guarantee held out to the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. He said any attempt to weaken Article 35 A will be detrimental, not only to particular region or community, but the people of all faiths, regions and sub-regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
