NEW DELHI, Mar 15: The Rajya Sabha today welcomed the selection of two of its members — Leader of the Opposition and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley and Congress veteran Karan Singh — as best parliamentarians.
“It is a matter of great pride for Rajya Sabha that two eloquent members of the House have been nominated as best parliamentarinans,” Senior BJP leader Najma Heptulla said, with members thumping the desk.
P J Kurien, who was in Chair said it was a matter of pride.
Jaitley and Singh, who are members of the Upper House from Gujarat and Delhi, along with JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav from Lok Sabha have been selected for the ‘Outstanding Parliamentarian Award’.
While Jaitley has been bestowed with the award for the year 2010, Karan Singh was selected for it for 2011 and Sharad Yadav for 2012.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar had constituted an Award Committee to select the member for the award for the three years while the Executive Committee of the Indian Parliamentary Group had accepted the recommendation of the Award Committee.
The Award is conferred each year on an Outstanding Parliamentarian recommended by the Committee and approved by the Executive Committee of the Indian Parliamentary Group. (PTI)
