SRINAGAR, Oct 13: The incessant rains and snowfall on the mountain peaks in Kashmir valley led to plummeting of temperatures by 14 degrees Celsius since Friday marking the beginning of cold weather ahead of winter in Kashmir valley.
The upper reaches of Pahalgam, in South Kashmir, received season’s fresh snowfall forcing tourists to buy warm clothes as they were shivering with cold.
Light to moderate snowfall was also reported from Sheshnag, Mahagunas, Pisso top and Panjtarni on traditional yatra route to Amarnath cave. Upper reaches of Shopian also received light snowfall.
Reports from North Kashmir said that upper reaches of Gulmarg and mountain tops near the Line of Control (LoC) also experienced light to moderate snowfall during the night bringing down the temperatures.
Continuous rains also lashed Kashmir valley leading to the plummeting of temperatures in Kashmir valley by several notches. However, Meteorological Department said the weather will improve tomorrow when the impact of Western Disturbance (WD) will ease out.
The continuous rains led to water logging in several areas of Srinagar city due to faulty drainage. However, Srinagar Municipal Committee used de-watering pumps at several places. People mostly preferred to remain indoors and traffic on the roads less than normal Sunday traffic despite Eid-ul Azaha.
A Met official said here that maximum day temperature in Srinagar was recorded 14.7 degree Celsius and minimum temperature was recorded at 12.8 degree Celsius. “Srinagar recorded 8 centimetre rainfall during past 24 hours”, the official said.
The maximum temperature recorded on Friday was 28.4 degree Celsius leading to plummeting of temperature by around 14 degrees.
People for the first time brought woollens out in Kashmir during this season as icy winds were blowing across the Valley following the snowfall on mountain peaks. Large numbers of people have pulled out fire pots to keep themselves warm.
The winter capital Jammu recorded maximum day temperature of 24.9 degree Celsius and minimum of 20.5 degree Celsius. And the rainfall was recorded at 1.8 centimetre.
