JAMMU, July 8: Senior Advocate D C Raina is likely to be appointed as new Advocate General of the State and formal order is expected any time. This would be for the third time that Mr Raina will be holding the post of State’s top Law Officer.
Official sources told EXCELSIOR that Raj Bhavan has almost cleared the name of Senior Advocate D C Raina for the post of Advocate General and formal order in this regard is likely to be issued by the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in a day or two.
Mr Raina will be holding the post of Advocate General for the third time as he was also appointed as State’s top Law Officer during Governor’s rule in the State in 2008 and 2016. In his previous tenures as Advocate General, Mr Raina represented the State in different cases including Article 370, NEET and NIT students row in the High Court and Supreme Court.
The position of Advocate General had become vacant after Jehangir Iqbal Ganie, who was appointed as Advocate General by the previous PDP-BJP Government, was asked to resign by the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs following imposition of Governor’s rule in the State.
Apart from Advocate General, the other Law Officers like Senior Additional Advocate Generals (Sr AAGs), Additional Advocate Generals (AAGs) and Government Advocates had also tendered resignations after being told to do so by the Law Department keeping in view the guidelines prepared by the State Administrative Council in 2016.
However, they have been directed to continue to look after their respective assignments till alternate arrangement is made by the State Administrative Council (SAC) headed by Governor N N Vohra, sources said.
