Rain, snow make flood hit to shiver

SRINAGAR, Oct 28: Rains in Kashmir valley and fresh snowfall in the mountains led to drop in the temperature making lakhs of people living in tents in several parts flood hit areas of the Valley to shiver.
The rains in Kashmir valley since morning and fresh snowfall in hills have led to drop in the day temperatures to around 7 degree Celsius.
Plains of Kashmir valley witnessed rainfall since morning while hills of Kashmir along the Line of Control in Gulmarg, Tangdhar, Macchi and Gurez sectors had fresh snowfall today.
The chilly winds blowing across Kashmir today made people to shiver especially over 3 lakh people who are living in tents. According to official figures around one lakh people are living in tenets as they have no permanent winter resistant shelters.
According to official figures 1, 04, 206 houses including 83, 044 pucca and 21, 162 kacha were destroyed in floods. The figures suggest that 1, 50, 353 houses including 96,089 pucca houses and 54,264 kacha houses were partially damaged.
Government in some areas has paid Rs 70, 000 to those whose houses were fully damaged and Rs 12000 whose house were partially damaged.
People in general alleged that Government has failed to help them in rebuilding their houses. This has forced large number of people to take shelter in damaged house due to drop in temperatures.
One person died as a wall of his house collapsed while he was cleaning his house in Srinagar so as to take shelter in it during winter.
Sajad Ahmad Kand son of Mohammad Ishaq Kand resident of Kand Mohalla, Dal Lake, was injured when wall of his house collapsed while he was cleaning his house.
He was shifted to SMHS hospital, Srinagar for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries.
