Rain lashes J&K, 12.9 deg fall in Jammu’s temp

Fresh WDs to hit Kashmir on May 4

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, May 2: Many areas of J&K continued to experience heavy rain since last night, bringing sharp fall in temperature while the MeT office forecast widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall on higher reaches across Jammu and Kashmir during next 24 hours and fresh Western Disturbances (WDs) will bring more rains later this week.
Srinagar and South Kashmir areas were lashed by rains today while the hills including Zojila had fresh snowfall bringing down the temperatures. The incessant rains led to waterlogging in low lying areas of Srinagar and other places.
Director Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus said that a brief spell of rain and thunderstorm was expected at scattered places towards evening on May 3.

From May 4-6, he said, “weather was likely to be fair to partly cloudy. A brief spell of rain/thunderstorm may occur towards late afternoon/evening.” From May 7-8, he said, rain was likely at many places.
The higher reaches of Jammu region also experienced fresh snowfall while day temperature in Jammu recorded a sharp fall of 12.9 deg C.
Jammu recorded 22.8 deg Celsius temperature during the day today against the normal temperature of 37.7 deg C while the night temperature remained 16.8 deg C.
Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a minimum temperature of 14.6 degree C and maximum 19,0 deg C today; Tourist resort Bhaderwah minimum 11.2 deg C, Batote 10.9 deg while Banihal town minimum 10.1 degree Celsius temperature today.
It was raining intermittently in entire Ramban sector today, the road was slippery but despite brief disruptions at a few places, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway by and large remained operational.
Since early morning, Jammu and its adjoining areas experienced continuous rain but the weather improved after mid day. Water logging at many low lying areas affected smooth movement of traffic.
In the meantime, Srinagar recorded a low of 10.6°C against 11.3°C the previous night and it was 0.9°C below normal for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of 9.0°C against 7.8°C the previous night and it was above normal by 1.3°C for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 6.5°C against 4.7°C previous night and it was 1.6°C above normal for the famous tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of 8.3°C against 7.7°C the previous night and it was 0.1°C below normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of 3.9°C against 4.0°C previous night and it was 0.4°C below normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 8.1°C against 8.7°C the previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the town.
