*Jammu’s temp falls 8 deg below normal

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, Nov 9: Most of the areas across J&K witnessed rain and snowfall in hilly areas today while Mughal Road was again closed for traffic.
After fresh rain and snowfall on hills, Jammu recorded about 8 degrees Celsius fall in temperature from normal while people took out woolens after feeling cold of this season in plain areas of the region.
With overnight cloud cover, there was some increase in minimum temperature today in Kashmir but stayed below freezing point in Gulmarg which also received fresh snowfall along with hills today while Valley was lashed by rains.
The Meteorological department has forecast more rains and snow till November 11. “Light to moderate rain/snowfall over higher reaches is expected at many places from today evening to November 11 forenoon,” the MeT office said.
He said there was no forecast of any major rain or snowfall during the spell. “From November 12-16, the weather is expected to be fair to partly cloudy,” he added.
Regarding probable impacts, he said, snowfall and low temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation, mainly over Zojila, Jammu-Srinagar Highway and Leh-Manali road on November 10 and 11.
“Prior to embarking on journey, people are advised to know the status of the road from traffic police to avoid inconveniences,” he said, adding, “Travellers on major passes are advised to carry sufficient food items, warm shoes, clothes etc with them as road conditions remain uncertain during inclement weather.”
Hills in Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall while the Valley had rains today.
Mughal Road that was re-opened for traffic last evening after remaining closed for three days was closed this morning again after overnight snowfall in Pir Ki Gali area.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a low of 5.4°C against 4.3°C the previous night. The temperature was 3.6°C above normal for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of 5.0°C, the same as the previous night. The temperature was 3.1°C above normal for the town.
In Pahalgam, the mercury settled at 2.9°C against minus 1.6°C the previous night and it was 4.0°C above normal for resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of 4.1°C, the same as the previous night and it was 1.4°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.0°C against minus 2.6°C the previous night and it was 2.2°C below normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 4.7°C against 2.8°C the previous night. It was 3.4°C above normal for the north Kashmir place.
Pahalgam received 0.5mm of rainfall while Gulmarg amassed 2cms of fresh snowfall today.
Meanwhile, Mughal Road, connecting twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri with Shopian was closed for traffic early today after snowfall at several places enroute including Pir Ki Gali (PKG), Mansar Morh and Poshana. The road was closed by authorities keeping in view safety of passengers, an official at Poonch said.
Most of people from Pir Panjal prefer to visit Kashmir via this road as this is the shortest route for them to reach Kashmir. Moreover, Ravinder Singh IC PP Poshana said that due to regular snowfall, road is closed.
Hilly areas of Bhaderwah, Doda, Bani, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri and Reasi also witnessed fresh snowfall.
Chopper service to Katra- Mata Vaishnodevi was hit due to bad weather during this afternoon. However, yatra continued despite rain today.
Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 20.1 deg C which is 8 degrees below normal. The City witnessed a minimum temperature of 14.6 deg C today. Katra recorded a minimum temperature of 12.6 deg C, Bhaderwah 5.4 deg C, Batote 6.3 deg, Kargil 1.6 deg while Leh recorded minimum 3.1 deg C temperature today.
