Rabi Lamichhane says hour-long talks with PM Modi focused on ‘development diplomacy’ and stronger Nepal-India ties

KATHMANDU, Jun 3: Nepal’s ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane has described his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi as a “productive hour-long conversation,” emphasizing a shared vision for strengthening Nepal-India relations.

In a social media post, Lamichhane said both sides discussed moving beyond “past constraints” to build a new phase of ‘development diplomacy’ grounded in civilizational ties, digital connectivity, and improved cross-border linkages.

He said he shares PM Modi’s vision for a future based on mutual trust and cooperation, adding that the RSP looks forward to turning these opportunities into tangible outcomes for the people of both Nepal and India through shared prosperity.

“It was indeed a great delight to engage in such a productive hour-long conversation with Hon. PM  @narendramodi today. I share your vision for a future where Nepal and India transcend past constraints to embrace a new era of development diplomacy. By focusing on shared civilizational bonds, digital corridors, and seamless connectivity, we can truly build a partnership defined by progress and mutual trust. RSP looks  forward to translating these possibilities into reality for  people of Nepal and India – for our shared prosperity,” he posted on X.

Prime Minister Modi, during his meeting with the chairman of Nepal’s ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Rabi Lamichhane reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening its “Neighbourhood First” partnership with Nepal.

Furthermore, both leaders stressed on the importance of closer cooperation and a renewed push to strengthen ties between the two neighbours. During the meeting, the PM said that India looks forward to working closely with Nepal’s political leadership to bolster the “special and multifaceted” bilateral relationship between New Delhi and Kathmandu, and emphasised a shared vision for a “prosperous future” between the two countries.

The meeting included several top Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

The Nepali delegation included his wife Nikita Poudel, RSP Joint General Secretary Bipin Acharya, Secretariat member Deepak Bohara and personal secretary Pradeep Acharya.

“Nepal is a priority partner under our Neighbourhood First policy, and we look forward to collaborating with the new government to elevate the special and multifaceted relationship between our two countries to greater heights,” the PM Modi wrote on X.

The Nepali politician’s meeting with the premier was part of a broader series of high-level engagements during his visit to India.

Earlier, the RSP leader had held separate talks with union Home Minister Amit Shah, who congratulated the RSP on its electoral performance and gave India’s best wishes to Nepal’s new political leadership, Nepal Khabar reported.

Lamichhane also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, where they discussed development cooperation, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges. Jaishankar described the interaction as “a pleasure,” noting that talks centered on strengthening the India-Nepal development partnership and expanding people-to-people ties, which he said are key to shared growth and prosperity.

The MEA said the RSP leader’s meetings with the India’s senior most officials reflected the regular and multi-layered nature of India-Nepal engagement, spanning government, political parties, cultural links and people-to-people connections.

Lamichhane arrived in New Delhi on Monday at the invitation of BJP leader Nitin Nabin and has since held a series of meetings with senior party figures and government officials.

The Nepali politician is also scheduled to visit the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on Thursday before concluding his visit.
