SRINAGAR, May 19: Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Minister for Public Works, Floriculture, Gardens & Parks, called on N.N. Vohra, Governor at the Raj Bhavan today.
The Governor discussed with Mr. Bukhari the urgent need for the time-bound repair and continuing effective maintenance of all important Roads and Highways in the State, particularly the Jammu-Srinagar, Srinagar-Gulmarg, Srinagar-Uri, Khanabal-Pahalgam and Srinagar-Sonamarg Highways and removal of encroachments and mulba along all important road networks, particularly the entire stretch of the Lakhanpur-Srinagar, Khanabal-Pahalgam, and Srinagar-Sonamarg Highways, for ensuring against recurring traffic congestions which take place during the ensuing peak tourist season and the forthcoming pilgrimage period.
The Governor also re-iterated the importance of effective traffic management and adherence to Road Safety procedures. He also pointed to the need for all Highways and important road networks being properly maintained throughout the year; over-bridges and under-passes being provided for safe pedestrian crossings; ensuring that the railings provided along both sides of the Highways are not broken by the local vested interests; maintaining the central verge of the Highways by planting suitable flowering shrubs; not allowing tea-shops, dhabawallahas and hotels to come up along the highways; providing well planned Lay Overs at suitable intervals, all along the Highways, where the passengers can stop for refreshments, using public conveniences etc.
The Governor also stressed the importance of public gardens being well maintained, specially as lakhs of tourists visit them. Mr. Bukhari informed the Governor that the proposal for declaration of historical Mughal Gardens as a World Heritage Site is being closely pursued with UNESCO.
