Sir,
Please refer the news item titled “Arrangements for Annual Chhari Yatra to Purmandal discussed “DE March 19 of 2019, wherein, among other issues the launching of a cleanliness drive in River Devika as a pre-emptive exercise to make the event a grand success stand discussed.
Precisely speaking the carrying of holy mace to the shrine is a subsidiary to the largest annual Purmandal Mela known as Chet Choudish attracting more than a lac of devotee tourists.
Holding of cleanliness drives on such occasions is a welcome step but it is very sad to point out that whatsoever amount of hard toil and labour we invest on such drives is always a futile exercise because of the existence of a Shamshan Ghat beneath the holy Shiva Temple complex i.e a grave public nuisance in the shape of emission of foul smell, air pollution and water source pollution etc. Unless there is a complete ban on these cremations such drives carry no meaning.
I would like to request the District Adm to ensure imposition of total ban on these cremations. The connected Departments like Irrigation Flood Control, CCDU-WSSO, PHE, Pollution Control Board and other NGOs are also requested to join the fray. The Rural Dev.Deptt can play a pivotal role on the issue by utilizing the services of Sarpanches and Panches for creating awareness among the rural masses through holding Gram Sabhas, seminars debates etc so that a cool calm, clean and pollution free environ is provided to the devotees visiting the holy shrine and the Devika jal (Water) which once liked by people to keep preserved in their household for use on important occasions as Gangajal is not subjected to further contamination.
