PSC to recommend Centre for liberal funding to J&K

SRINAGAR:
Announcing to recommend to Centre liberal funding for rebuilding infrastructure damaged in devastating flood in September, last year in Jammu and Kashmir, the Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) stressed the need for putting in place comprehensive flood protection mechanism in the State.
The 31-member committee, headed by Hukum Singh, MP, after concluding the four-day visit to different parts of the Kashmir valley, today said the devastating floods not only resulted in loss of precious human lives but also caused colossal loss to the households, businesses, livestock, crops and fruits in Jammu and Kashmir.
A massive effort is needed for relief and rehabilitation, which is not possible without the liberal financial support of the Central Government, Mr Singh told mediapersons here before leaving for Delhi. He said a comprehensive flood-protection mechanism also needs to be put in place in the State to avert such disasters in future.
Terming the 2014 deluge a “national disaster”, the Chairman laid emphasis on the “dire” need of funds from the Centre for relief and rehabilitation of people affected by the floods. “I feel it was a national disaster and only national resources can address the problems. Relief and rehabilitation cannot be done by the State Government,” Mr Singh said. He said the State Government cannot address the problems on its own and needs support from the Centre.
