Protests held across Jammu over power crisis

JAMMU, June 11: A number of protests were held today by political and other organizations in Jammu over worst ever power crisis in the city and its adjoining areas.
Agitated over the acute power and water crisis faced by Jammu region during the times of soaring mercury levels, the activists of NPP led by Harsh Dev Singh, chairman JKNPP torched the effigy of BJP Government amid raising of anti-Government slogans. Speaking on the occasion, Harsh lambasted the Government for accusing the general masses for power crisis in the name of power theft. Singh said that Panthers Party would continue to agitate till provision of basic amenities to the poor and deprived classes was ensured by the authorities concerned.
The workers of Dogra Front & Shiv Sena under the leadership of their president Ashok Gupta staged a protest in Jammu city against non availability of electricity in Jammu. Gupta said people of Jammu are being deprived of basic facilities and the power supply to the city is extremely poor. “The shortage of power supply has led to scarcity of water in the city,” he said and the Lt Governor to take cognizance of the matter and issue necessary instructions to the PDD authorities for immediate action to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the people.
Lambasting the administration for failing to provide even basic facility of power and drinking water supply during the ongoing scorching summer season, National Conference State secretary and former MLC Rattan Lal Gupta, in a statement issued, said as a result of administrative inertia, the people of Jammu are reeling under erratic power supply, which also impacts the water supply. He said frequent power cuts have been main sources of irritation to the people and the accountability deficit in the departments concerned has led to chaotic situations in the city as well as rural Jammu.
President, Mission Statehood Sunil Dimple today held a strong protest on Amphalla-Janipur High Court Road against the JPDCL for unscheduled power cuts from 15 to 18 hours in this peak summer season. Dimple said that the due to long and unscheduled power cuts, women, children and patients are spending sleepless nights while the JPDCL officials even avoid to take calls of the public what to say of solving their issues.
Aam Aadmi Party Jammu has demanded Power Development Department to stop unscheduled power cuts and fluctuations in Jammu. In a statement, Gurmeet Singh, Aam Aadmi Party leader and social activist said that the unscheduled power cuts and fluctuations have made the lives of people difficult in these hot summer season. Singh said that the J&K Government should follow the Kejriwal Electricity Model in Jammu and Kashmir as Delhi is the only city in the country that enjoyed 24 hours and 200 units free electricity supply.
Youth Wing of National Conference today slammed Jammu’s electricity department for frequent power cuts as the mercury touches 43 degrees Celsius. In a statement issued today, Tejinder Pal Singh (Aman), provincial secretary of NC Youth Wing said that Jammu city and its adjoining areas are the worst affected as they are getting electricity for only three to four hours daily. “The day temperature in Jammu has crossed 43 degrees and the JKPDCL is sleeping even as the region faces major power crises,” Singh said, and warned of launching agitation if the regular power supply is not provided to the people of Jammu region.
J&K unit of National Democratic Party Indian (NDPI JK UT President Rajesh Gupta today warned J&K Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha to deal with the power crisis in Jammu region within 24 hours or give resignation. Gupta further said, “If a head of the Union Territory is not able to provide basic amenities to his people then he has no right to continue. Gupta said the electricity is playing hide and seek for last 4 days in this scorching heat while the BJP sitting in power had promised to provide 24 hours uninterrupted electricity supply to the people of Jammu.
Atul Sharma, president, Jammu and Kashmir Brahmin Sabha, expressed his displeasure over worst power scenario in Jammu city. He said the public is already troubled by the Corona pandemic and inefficiency of electricity department has further added to their miseries as it has failed to provide uninterrupted power supply to the masses. Sharma appealed LG Manoj Sinha to take cognizance of the matter and provide relief to the people.
