Srinagar, Oct 18: Hundreds of Sikhs today protested in South and North Kashmir against the ‘desecration’ of their holy book few days ago in Punjab.
Dozens of Sikhs took to streets in Awantipora Town of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district and blocked Srinagar-Jammu National Highway for nearly an hour. The protesters were chanting slogans against the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also against right-wing Hindutva groups.
In neighbouring Tral Town, the Sikh protesters in the morning assembled at Bus Stand and shouted anti Government slogans. The protesters accused Rashtriya Seyamsevak Sangh (RSS) of ‘desecrating’ the holy book.
The Sikhs also took to streets at Nanak Bhawan in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district this morning. The protesters blocked Baramulla-Srinagar highway and chanted anti-BJP and anti-RSS slogans. The protesters paid tributes to two Sikh protesters who were killed in police firing at Punjab during protests against the sacrilegious act.
Due to road blockade, scores of vehicles were stranded on the highway and after police intervention; the protesters were pushed to a nearby Sikh school. The protesters sought strict punishment against the culprits and blamed Modi-led Government of failure to protect religious minorities in the country.
The Sikhs had yesterday also staged protests in the heart of Srinagar. The protests have been also happening in several parts of Jammu from last few days against the alleged sacrilegious act in Punjab.
