Protesting people thrash AEE, AE; one held, 8 booked

MENDHAR, June 26: The police arrested one person and registered case against eight others after a strong mob of protesting public against PHE Department at Mankote thrashed two engineers of the concerned department and also resorted to pelting stone on police party which tried to quell the mob.
Reports said that people of the area were protesting against the PHE authorities for their failure to provide drinking water to the public for the last more than one week. A local pumping station went out of order and the public was left to suffer. An Army Havaldar Mohd Asif ( of 13 JAKLI) who was on leave at his home village was leading the protest even being in uniform. Earlier, SHO along with some cops and Naib Tehsildar reached the spot but later AEE PHE Sub Division Mendhar Israr Ahmed and AE Mech Tahir also arrived there to pacify the agitating public.
During discussion over the issue some youth including Army Havaldar allegedly manhandled the AEE and AE Tahir Ahmed. The police intervened and tried to make the people flee. Some youth resorted to stone pelting in which a Constable Zulfkar Ahmed was injured. The engineers were however, rescued by the police.
The police arrested Mohd Asif (Hav) and registered a case FIR No. 89/ 2016 against eight other identified persons. SDPO Mendhar Shahid Nahim said that police parties were conducting raids to nab the accused persons resorting to violence during protest.
