Protest staged against Sandi firing range

SAMBA, July 9: A large number of people led by Aam Aadmi Party leader, I D Khajuria staged a protest demonstration at Nonath near National Highway in Samba today and demanded shifting of Sandi firing range.
The locals drawn from surrounding villages including Dinga Amb, Pacca Kotha, Chandli, Taki, Rattanpur, Surada, Parmoli, Nichalah, Jatwali and Balooni etc gathered and shouted the slogans “firing range band karo”.
The protestors said that the range which was established in 1992 and remained operational till 2008 has made the people to suffer in many ways, adding that the people of these concerned areas had been completely harassed, forcing them to raise voice against this range.
Puran Chand, one of the protestors said that their children are continuously living in shyness of the danger aroused out of shell explosions at this range.
I D Khajuria said that since establishment of the range 313 serious accidents have occurred, the list of which has been submitted with the Government.
He further said the compensation for the loss have not been paid to the victims, even though, the committees were formed under the supervision of the concerned Tehsildars to assess the criteria of loss.
Meanwhile, ADC Samba, Inderjeet Bhagat pacified the protesters with an assurance that their problem will be solved at an earliest.
