Srinagar, Jan 16: Memb-ers of several medical and voluntary associations today staged a protest against the rising dog menace in Kashmir Valley.
Expressing concern over the menace, the protesters who assembled at Press Enclave here urged the concerned officials to immediately adopt the “preventive strategies” for controlling the canines in the Valley.
The protesters were holding banners, placard and pictures of a kid who was badly mauled by a dog here few days ago and is battling for his life. The protesters, including children, said that the lives of people particularly small kids are in danger as the attacks of dogs are on rise in the Valley as well as Srinagar.
“A total of 22,067 cases of dog bites have been recorded since 2014 while 20 persons died since 2008. This is alarming and dangerous and we appeal concerned authorities to wake up from the deep slumber and take steps to control the menace,” said one of the protesters. The protesters said that the sterilization has failed to yield results on ground and urged officials “not to waste further money on the same”.
Last year in Autumn session, the then Government had claimed that it was working on “multiple strategies” to control the dog menace in Kashmir valley and the dog bite cases is decreasing and it has come to down to 3701 in summer capital. “There has been 35 percent decrease in dog bite cases while the population of canines has also decreased by 50 percent,” the Government had said.
