MENDHAR, July 29: A large number of people led by some religious leaders held protest demonstration at Shahidi Yadgar here against a former Congress MLC and his men for their attempt to grab land meant for a Madarsa in the town here today.
The trouble started when the construction work on a large building belonging to a senior local Congress leader and former MLC was going on near Bus Stand. This land is said to have got allotted by the Congress leader from Revenue department. There is nearly 15 marla piece of land, adjoining this complex which belonged to a school. When the MLC’s men started raising pillars there, the locals objected to it. Some religious leaders also opposed this move.
A large number of people then came out on the road and approached police. The gathering then staged demonstration against Congress leader and the Revenue authorities. The SDPO and SHO sensing trouble reached there and stopped the work in the disputed area. Some family members of the Ex-MLC also reached there and got involved in heated exchanged with police and religious leaders. However, the police managed to control the situation. The public then started constructing pacca wall at the school land. The police deployed some force at the site to prevent any untoward incident.
SDPO Mendhar Amit Bhasin when contacted said that after people raised voice and protested against second party’s move to encroach upon some land of a Madarsa, he along with SDM Ranjit Singh, Tehsildar Mendhar and SHO reached there. The work got suspended and fresh measurement of the land was conducted. The second party was asked not to raise construction in the school land the matter was amicably settled. He said adequate force had been deployed to defuse the situation.
