Sir,
I would like to request concerned authorities of J&K State Govt to make immediate efforts to protect architectural heritage of Jammu city. In the post independence period of fast development we have completely forgotten the chapter of architectural heritage of Jammu at our own or were made to forget the same. The beautiful Iron Bridge on River Tawi was dismantled. The old and historic buildings constructed in typical Dogra Regional Architecture were either dismantled, got burnt or neglected. Where-ever a new building was constructed it totally ignored Dogra style of construction. It is not in practice in Kashmir and Ladakh. Now, we have been left with very less on the ground in the shape of architectural heritage.
The neglect of two reputed educational institutions like GGM Science College and Sri Ranbir Higher Secondary School speaks the truth about how we protect and up-grade our heritage buildings. Big announcements were made in the past to declare these buildings as protected monuments, but on the ground the KG classes with shining paints have spoiled the originality of one of these great buildings. The building of Ranbir Library has offices of High Ranking Officers. The offices should be shifted outside and let it function peacefully as Library without any further damage to its old style of construction. Same is the condition of Mubarak Mandi and Poonch House. The ahatas and hawelis of 22 Jammu Hill States exist nowhere on ground. The old buildings are eating dust and modern style of work has started. Let us think where it will take us. Will we be in a position to show even ten percent of colourful historical heritage of this region to our children in near future. Let us all think over it seriously.
Yours etc….
