Property worth lakhs destroyed in factory fire

SAMBA, Sept 13: In a major fire incident at Bari Brahmana, property worth  lakhs was destroyed at an industrial unit in Phase-I of the complex early today.
The incident took place at around 4 am apparently due to short circuit in Pragati Packing Ltd, an ink manufacturing unit in Lane No. 4 of  Phase-I at Bari Brahmana Industrial complex. The fire started from a shed where raw material used for manufacturing ink had been stored besides other goods.
The factory workers raised alarm and they informed Fire Services authorities. Three fire tenders from Bari Brahmana Station rushed to the site and launched operation. Later, three more tenders were requisitioned from Jammu which also joined the operation. The police party from  Bari Brahamana Police Station also reached there. The fire was controlled after three and half hours.
The factory owners have projected the loss of property to the tune of Rs 15 lakh. They said nearly 300 barrels (drums of 200 Lt. each) had been kept in the shed and majority of them have been burned in the fire besides other material.
Director, Fire Services R S Sodhi told the Excelsior that immediately after receiving information, the Firemen along with three tenders led by Fire Officer rushed to the spot. He said later two more fire tenders from Gandhi Nagar and one from Gangyal Fire Stations were rushed. Senior officials were supervising the operation. He said short circuit was said to be the cause of incident. The loss of property was being assessed. Mr Sodi said that there was no proper fire equipment installed at the unit and the department  has taken cognizance of the matter.
