Promotion of non conventional sources of energy

Sir,
This refers to the article’Not Coal, Sun is the Future’ by Dr Ashwani Mahajan (DE ,January 20,2015). The writer has rightly advocated the use of solar power as a viable alternative to thermal power as source of energy in the times to come to meet the growing needs of energy. He has advanced convincing arguments in favour of his viewpoint that solar power is more viable and healthier alternative to thermal power.Though the coal is one of the cheapest sources of producing energy in our country,it emits huge amounts of greenhouse gases, which, in turn, lead to an increase in the earth’s temperature.
Moreover, our country, like other countries of the world,is under international obligation to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by curtailing the use of coal in thermal power plants for the production of electricity.Solar power, on the other hand is a clean and renewable form of energy which is ecofriendly having zero effect on the environment and thus causing no environmental pollution. In the long run, energy produced from solar powers may be relatively cheaper though the initial cost may be a bit higher.
Thus, the need of the hour is to use the non conventional sources of energy such as wind, water, tides and sun for the production of electricity for meeting the ever surging demand of electricity and for a healthier living. The use of non conventional sources of energy can also be promoted by creating awareness among the masses through print/ electronic media about the use of solar panels and wind as source of energy and by supplying the equipments such as solar panels and solar gadgets such as solar heaters, solar cookers etc. on highly subsidized rates to the people, especially those living below the poverty line. Photovoltaic solar power generation system has virtually zero maintenance and thus, can be used in a hassle free manner. Earnest efforts also need to be taken to create awareness in masses about the need to conserve every unit of energy to meet the ever growing demand of energy both for domestic and commercial use.
Yours etc….
