JAMMU, June 17: Emphasizing for availing the opportunity to have delimitation of Assembly constituencies in J&K and make other corrections to meet the ends of justice, the former Union Minister, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has ridiculed the demand of the Congress and its fellow travellers to have early elections to the State Assembly.
In a statement, Prof. Gupta said that it was amazing that those who were responsible for wrought in various spheres of life and encouraged unlawful activities, were eager to achieve the selfish ends ignoring the fact that they boycotted the elections to the basic democracies which were meant to empower the people at the gross root level.
He said that it sounds ridiculous to have elections without waiting for fair delimitation to ensure justice to all the regions and the communities who have been denied political representation over the decades. Moreover, when 24 seats have been reserved for Pak held areas and lakhs have been forced to migrate to become refugees, why this uprooted lot should not get their share out of the reserved seats, he added.
Prof Gupta questioned the sincerity of those who are opposed to this demand by having no valid reasons except being guided by the narrow communal and parochial outlook.
Prof. Gupta said that during the past over seven decades now, there was never timely and fair delimitation of the constituencies both of Lok Sabha and that of the Assembly in this State.
Citing the example of unfairness and communal voice, he pointed out that Jammu district is not only having vast areas but is having voter strength of about fifteen lakh people, have been allotted just eleven seats whereas in the Valley on an average the Assembly segment is comprised of seventy five thousand votes. The height of injustice could be judged that Jammu West and Gandhi Nagar Assembly segments are having the voter strength of 1.75 lakh each. Still the Congress and its allies do not see the need for delimitation but are eager to have elections indicating that they are not as yet satisfied with the injustice and malpractices committed over the decades. All this needs to be exposed and rectified demonstrating strong will to have justice.
