JAMMU, Jan 11: Lal Bahadur Shastri was a great soul in a small body. If he would have survived for some time more as a Prime Minister of the country, many problems in troubled Kashmir would have been solved.
This was stated by the former Union Minister, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta while remembering Shastri Ji on his 52nd death anniversary. He said that Shastri was having quite clear perceptions about the unity and the integrity of India and wanted to get integrated J&K like other States of the country by removing all the barriers created under different designs.
Prof. Gupta recalled that it was during the small tenure of Shastri Ji that first of all the steps were taken to have integration of this State at the level of the people. It was in January 1965 that the Pradesh Committee of the Indian National Congress was established by merging Indian National Congress into the all India body. Similarly other national parties were persuaded to establish their Pradesh Committees and it was on January 19 , that the CPI set up its branch in this State so was done by some others, he added.
It was also during the tenure of Shastri that the nomenclature of the Sader-E- Riyasat was changed into Governor and also that of the Prime Minister of the State to that of the Chief Minister.
