JAMMU, Apr 11: Asstt Prof in Department of Electronics, Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College Prof Rakesh Kumar Gupta, has completed his one year research work at NASA Ames Research Centre.
During his one year research work, Prof Gupta  developed and characterized carbon nano fibers based bio-sensing chip and has successfully performed the detection of three cardiac markers C-reactive Protein (CRP), cardiac troponin (cTn-I) and Myoglobin) for diagnosis and prognosis of heart attack.
The sensitive detection of these three cardiac proteins at very low concentrations levels (part per billions) are much less than the clinical relevant range with very high selectivity. The results of CRP detection, an early biomarker of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) whose elevated concentration in blood serum can confirm the future heart attach event.
Prof Gupta later modified and developed the bio-sensing chip through lithography techniques for simultaneous detection of all the three cardiac biomarkers from a mixture or blood sample containing three proteins.
The results of multi protein detections show similar specificity and low detection limits and shall soon be published in reputed Journals as confirmed by Dr Meyya Meyyappan, Chief Scientist for Exploration Technology, NASA-ARC.
He further confirms that Prof Gupta’s research work at NASA-ARC would not only result in three research articles, which is an outstanding performance, but also carry forward the ultimate goal of developing hand held device for astronauts’ health monitoring from a nano litters of blood sample whilst working in ISS or other space research and exploration programs. This would help in low cost astronauts’ health monitoring with early warnings of heart attack or cardiac arrest during the space exploration mission.
