KATRA, Dec 13: Prof Kisor Kumar Chakrabarti, a renowned scholar of Indian Philosophy and retired Professor of Philosophy and Religion from Davis and Elkins College, West Virginia (USA), visited SMVDU as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Philosophy & Culture (DOPC).
During his visit, he conducted 11 text-reading sessions with the faculty members and research students of DOPC. Several sections of the Nyaya text called Karikavali with a commentary Muktavali, authored by Vishvanatha Panchanana (a Nyaya philosopher of 17th century AD), were taken up for discussion. A dense philosophical debate on the relevance of prayer in the beginning of a Sanskrit text, the Nyaya causal argument for the existence of God, the logical grounds for the acceptance of an immaterial self were some of the topics for the discussion.
Prof Chakrabarti lucidly demonstrated very impressive pedagogy for philosophical discussion. He compared philosophical debates in India with the Western logical tradition and pointed out with convincing examples that the density of debate in Indian philosophical tradition is unparalleled. Apart from the text reading sessions, he delivered a lecture on “Value Education and Virtue” .
