Price rise

Sir,
It was believed that  by replacing Congress Government at the Centre, there would be a complete change for the better. A new era would dawn. But things do not look so rosy. Barely a month has gone by and the public is faced with a steep price rise of essential items of daily consumption. The price of onion has risen from Rs.18/- to 26 /-, that of potato from 20/- to 29/-, milk from 36/- to 40/-, edible oil from 170/- per liter to 175/-. Prices of vegetables and important ingredients of daily consumption too are substantially up.  Prices of spices are touching the sky. All this has put an average house holder in quandary. It is becoming too difficult for Aam Admi to make two ends meet.
Prospects of fall in prices of onions, potatoes and other vegetables as well as that of spices, milk and its products are little. On the other hand the trend is towards further rise. Nobody can say for certain that the Government shall be able to stop the rise or even reduce the prices.  The difference between wholesale and retail prices is wide. While whole sale price of onions in Delhi is Rs.12.75 per kilo its retail price is Rs. 24.  The difference in whole sale and retail cost of other vegetables too is remarkably much. A closer look would show that it is the retailer who is having the loins share in this business.
A few days back price of petrol and diesel was hiked. While the petrol price affects the rich who can well afford it, increase in the price of diesel is bound to result in further rise in the cost of commodities.
Unfortunately the Government has not taken tough measures to punish the hoarders and profiteers. Efforts must be made to confiscate the hoarded stocks of onions and other edible products. Import of essential edible commodities is allowed and export of products which are in plenty in our country be stopped forthwith.
Yours etc….
O P Modi
