Prez pitches for linking research in edu institutions with industry

DURGAPUR/BURDWAN, WEST BENGAL, Nov 22:  Lamenting that India has not done enough in the field of research, President Pranab Mukherjee today pitched for linking research by educational institutions with the industry.
“I feel sad that out of 200 world’s top (educational) institutions, not a single institution from India finds its place…India is no longer leader of the world in education,” he said.
Mukherjee said the problem was not that the country lacked talent but there is a need for proper coordination and emphasis on research and development.
The President also said that in the more than last 80 years nobody from an Indian university had the distinction of winning a Nobel prize.
Mukherjee was addressing the convocation ceremony of National Institute of Technology in Durgapur.
He emphasised the need for having coordination between the educational institutions and the industry.
Mukherjee recommended establishing ‘industry cells’ so that collaborative research can take place to satisfy the needs of the market.
“Premier technical institutions like IITs and NITs have a responsibility to spearhead research in various branches of science. They have to become institutions of research apart from being institutions of learning,” the President said.
Addressing the convocation of Burdwan University separately, Muhkerjee said universities will have to link with grassroots innovations to help the underprivileged in the society.
He cautioned students that a “deep crisis” was silently seeping in the knowledge system of the country and one should be on guard.
Terming technology as power and super technology as super power, he stressed on the need for indigenous means to achieve success in technology.
West Bengal M K Narayanan, who is the Chancellor of the Burdwan Uinversity, lamented that at times research has not lived up to national and international levels. (PTI)
