Sir,
Of late there have been many incidents of suicide in our state.Almost everyday, there are newspaper reports of people ending their life in one way or the other. It seems, this trend is growing with each passing day with the increasing number of people, including the youth and the housewives ending their life and leaving their parents and relatives in perpetual agony and shock. There may be many reasons for such people to take this extreme step. They may be suffering from acute medical problems and pain, depression, financial problems, mental and psychological problems etc or some of them may tend to take this extreme step over failure in the exam, marital conflict, death of a loved one etc. Moreover, people in general and our youth in particular have high aspirations and unrealistic ambitions but many of them lack proper skills and strong will power to face the harsh realities of life and get provoked by a small failure or minor incident to take the extreme step.Whatever be the reason, the parents and relatives should not ignore the warning signs or sudden change in behaviour, withdrawl from friends and relatives, talking about hopelessness and desire to die, increased use of alcohol/drugs etc.Parents should spend quality time with their children and they should never fix unachievable and unrealistic targets for them in the exams/life.children should always be encouraged to use their ability to the optimum level but accept failure with joy. They ought to be trained in problem solving skills and adapt to changed cirumstances.Schools must provide congenial and safe atmosphere to the students. They should also arrange lectures by renowned psychologists and counsellors, especially before examinations to enable the children to cope with the exam stress. As many incidents of suicide occur by hanging from the ceiling fans, fitting ceiling fans with sensor sirens, especially in school, college and university hotels could also help a lot in lowering suicide rate.Similarly.It must be remembered that life is the beautiful gift from God and everybody should enjoy life to their fill. There may be times of tension and stress but such tough times may be taken as challanges to be faced with strong will power and tenacity of mind for enjoying better days ahead.
