Preservation of History

Sir,
This has reference to the editorial ‘Preserve history’ (DE, August 26, 2016). It is indeed astonishing to read that various departments of the State Government have not sent the record of the  past 31 years to the Archives Department for preservation, despite many requests by the said department to do so.There is no gainsaying the fact that preservation of documents related to major activities, proposals, discussions and decisions of various departments of any government form an important part of the history of the state and need to be preserved as such by the Department of Archives. These documents are very important for the research scholars, reporters, writers, students and all those who are interested in the history of our state. It is because of the preservation of documents related to the speeches of great statesmen such as Jawahar Lal Nehru, Mahatama Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela etc that we know them better today.Similarly great saints, thinkers and philosphers such as Vivekananda, Karl Marx, etc delivered famous  and thought provoking speeches which moved and guided the world and  became a part of history and have been carefully preserved. Furthermore, the speeches delivered by the Nobel Laureates at the time of receiving of the coveted Nobel Prize can be read because they are preserved.Had these important documents not been preserved, they would have been destroyed with the passage of time and the world would have been a poorer place without them. Our state is passing through turbulent times and the decisions and proposals of various departments during these crucial years may be of much interest and use to the future planners, politicians, administrators and may be of  significant help in pulling the state out of turmoil and catapulting it on the path of development and progress. The government needs to ensure that all the important documents of these 31 years are preserved and no negligence with regard to the preservation of documents is repeated in future.
Yours etc……
