It is heartening to read that Samooh Theatre staged the Urdu translation of famous 5th century BC Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex by Sophocles on the concluding day of the annual theatre festival at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu.The famous Greek play set in Thebes and based on the theme of patricide and incest, revolves around Thebian King Oedipus. The play has a complex plot and tragic end and presenting such a play in Urdu on the stage to the satisfaction and amusement of the audience is a formidable challange and no small job.Thus, all those associated with the play-director, producer, cast etc deserve appreciation for their excellent performance which enthralled the spectators.
It is hoped that more such plays of Sophocles and other Greek playwrights will be presented in near future in Jammu in Hindi, Urdu and Dogri to give the Jammuites a glimpse of Greek literature.
