SRINAGAR, May 28: A 12-member delegation of the office bearers of the Jammu & Kashmir Political Migrants Front, met N. N. Vohra, Governor, at Raj Bhavan here today and presented to him a memorandum of their demands.
The demands presented by the delegation led by Sheikh Mohi-ud-Din Shabnam, Chairman of the Front, included, enhancement of monthly cash relief of migrants, providing employment to their wards, provision of additional accommodation to the political migrants, representation to the Front in the Apex Committee for Migrants and providing medical facilities to them.
The Governor gave patient hearing to the deputationists and assured that he would take up the issues raised by them with the concerned authorities in the State and the Central Governments.
M. Narendra, Chairman and Managing Director, Indian Overseas Bank also met Mr. Vohra and briefed him about the functioning of the Indian Overseas Bank in J&K and its future expansion plans including the establishment of some branches to provide specialized support to the advancement of the agricultural sector.
The Governor suggested to Mr. Narendra the usefulness of his executives keeping contact with the Divisional Commissioners, the two Farm Universities, the State Agricultural Department and the EDI to identify viable projects which could be provided financial support, particularly to boost fruit processing units and establishment of the cold chain.
Dipa Dixit, Member, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), New Delhi in a meeting with Mr Vohra discussed issues relating to the protection and promotion of child rights. She briefed the Governor about the activities of NCPCR in the two Pilot Projects which are being run in Kupwara and Bandipore districts, which are aimed at securing the child rights.
The Governor stressed the high importance of enlarging awareness in regard to the available safeguards for the protection of child rights and in this regard highlighted the crucial role of the NCPCR.
Ms. Dixit was accompanied by Tanveer Ahmed Dar, Programme Coordinator.
Raja Shabir Khan, winner of the 60th National Film Awards for his film “Shepherds of Paradise” also called on Mr. Vohra and presented him a copy of this award winning film.
Mr. Khan, a local film maker from Kashmir, had recently won a national award in the category of best non-feature film and best cinematography.
The Governor complimented Mr. Khan for his achievements in the field of film making and hoped that he will produce many more films which reflect the unmatched scenic beauty of Kashmir and also depict the deep foundations of the secular belief which binds the various regions of the State.
Dr. Aziz Hajini, President, Adbi Markaz Kamraz and Member, Advisory Panel of the National Book Trust of India also called on Mr. Vohra.
During their meeting, the Governor and Dr. Hajini discussed the literary and cultural scenario of the State. Other issues which came up for discussion included the need to devote high attention to the promotion of Kashmiri language and literature.
The Governor accepted Dr. Hajini’s request to inaugurate a 10-day Book Exhibition being organized by the National Book Trust of India at Srinagar later this year, in which reputed publishers are scheduled to participate.
