SRINAGAR, July 24: As the power cuts in Kashmir valley despite summer and Ramadhan are unscheduled and frequent, Police used force at several places against protesters and arrested at least two youth.
Scores of residents of Baran Pathar area came out in protest this morning against frequent power cuts. The residents said that the power supply has been snapped to the area since last evening adding that they faced hardships during Sehri and Iftaar since the holy month of Ramzan is in progress these days.
After raising mini-protest in their own locality the protesters came out on the main road near the Fire and Emergency Services Department to lodge protests there. The protesters sat on a dharna for three hours and raised slogans in support of their demands.
As the protesters were sitting on a dharna a police party led by SSP Srinagar swooped on them. The police personnel wielded sticks on the protesters including women and some of them sustained injuries. A woman after suffering injuries due to the police action fell unconscious and was shifted to hospital.
The traffic movement was disrupted in the area for many hours. The police personnel chased away the protesters and the situation turned volatile in the Baran Pathar and the adjoining areas.
A group of police personnel entered the Baran Pathar area and dragged at least two youth out of their houses and beat them severely. The two youth bled profusely and were taken away by police to some unknown destination. The police action led to strike in the area and the shopkeepers downed their shutters while demanding action against the police personnel.
The police action led to minor pelting incident in the Baran Pathar area and some of the youth pelted stones on the police personnel present in the locality.
Reports of protest have also been received from the Seki Dafar locality of Safa Kadal area and Pattan in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district. People in these areas lodged strong protests against the Power Development Department. The protesters urged for streamlining of power distribution while demanding better supply during the holy month of Ramzan.
