Srinagar, Mar 24: Police today foiled the march of temporary teachers engaged during last year’s academic calendar by charging batons on them in which several of them were injured. Police also detained dozens of them but they were later released.
Hundreds of qualified youth who were engaged by the previous Government on academic arrangement as teachers in schools have been demanding continuation of their engagements.
“About 8000 such teachers, 5000 in Jammu and 3000 in Kashmir divisions, were engaged by the National Conference-Congress Government last year for academic session on Rs 3000 remuneration per month, but we were shown exit door within two months,” the protesting teachers said.
“We were selected purely on merit basis after proper procedure and were absorbed at different vacancies in Government schools,” the protesting teachers said.
They said, however, they were shown doors within two months of their services. “Many of the youth employed on one day, were informed next day that their contract has been ended,” they said.
These protesting youths have high academic qualification, with more than one hundred having PhD degrees and some having qualified NET tests also. “We studied hoping that we will get a decent livelihood. We can’t do manual labour as that is not suited for us,” Javiad Ahmad Sofi, one of the protesters from Pulwama said.
Police swung into action and took dozens into the preventive custody after the later refused to disperse peacefully.  They staged demonstrations for half a day and insisted the new Government to decide about their present and future.
