Srinagar, Feb 29: Police today used force against teachers who were protesting against the Director of School Education Kashmir (DSEK), Shah Faesal, and detained dozens of them when they attempted to march towards Directorate Office here.
Hundreds of teachers led by Jammu and Kashmir Teachers’ Forum (JKTF) Abdul Qayoom Wani assembled at Press Enclave and staged massive protest against the DSEK for curbing unionism in the education institutes of the Valley.
The protesters raised slogans against the DSEK and urged him to “mend his ways”.
The JKTF chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani said DSEK Shah Faesal is resorting to childish acts and accused him of creating chaos and confusion in the department. “This Director is a kid, an immature person. We warn him to mend his ways otherwise he has to face the brunt,” said Wani.
As the agitating teachers began to march towards DSEK office, a large contingent of police which was additionally deployed there resorted to baton charge and teargas shelling, triggering scuffle between the two sides.
Police also began to detain protesting teachers and nearly 50 of them including JKTF chairman Qayoom Wani were bundled into the vehicles and lodged at nearby Kothi Bagh Police Station. A spokesman of JKTF said that 10 of their members were injured as police beat them.
The police action created chaos in entire Lal Chowk as pedestrians were seen running towards safer places. The situation however later returned to normal after protesting teachers dispersed gradually.
