Police foil employees’ march, scores detained

SRINAGAR, Aug 3: Dozens of employees of Urban Local Bodies were detained by police when they were protesting against the Government for its failure to fulfill their demands.
Score of employees under the banner of ‘J&K Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum’ assembled here and staged anti-Government protests for its failure to release their salary as per the re-organization pattern of the department with 80 percent HRA/DA.
The protesters were also demanding that the daily wagers working in the department be regularized and the sweeping staff be paid Rs 4500 per month.
They also demanded that service recruitment rules be implemented by the department and creation of various posts as approved vide SRO-214 dated 23/05/2008 be done to accommodate other employees.
The protests call was supported by Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) and Joint Consultative Committee (JCC). “The employees have been working without pay for months together due to the delay in the release of salary grant in the department,” EJAC President, Abdul Qayoom said.
Meanwhile, Police detained scores of employees including a faction president of JCC Abdul Qayoom Wani and Manzoor Pampori.
Before being taken into custody, JCC president Abdul Qayoom Wani alleged the Government is ignoring the demands of the employees intentionally. He said that the employees are being forced to take to streets by the Government, which failed to meet their demands.
