JAMMU, May 17: Police resorted to cane-charge to disperse the students who were holding protest demanding setting up a commission for reservation for BPL and middle class of upper castes”.
The students under the banner of National Front for Equality (NFFE) led by its president Pawan Singh Chib and provincial president Ranjit Singh assembled outside Press Club and raised slogans in favour of their demands.
The protestors were demanding setting up a commission for reservation for BPL and middle class of upper castes.
Later, the agitating students in the shape of rally started marching towards Dogra Chowk and tried to block the vehicular movement.
Heavy deployment of police restricted their attempt and restored to lathicharge to disperse the protestors.
During lathi-charge some students received minor injuries and two students were arrested, who were released later.
While speaking, Pawan Chib said that the reservation policy was started for only 10 years and it was to be abolished after that but even after 67 years of Independence the reservation policy stands where it was 67 years ago.
“Only leaders of Jammu can explain why they didn’t speak on the issue all that time”, he said, adding that the people of upper caste were fed up with reservation policy and were at the brink of losing their identity.
Chib further said that the people of upper castes in the past were known as landlords but now majority of the population was working as labourers.
He claimed that the condition of upper castes people had deteriorated to such an extent that in some areas people can not even afford their meals.
“Even the schemes started by the Government only favour one section of the society and people of upper castes were neglected in formation of schemes”, he added.
Chib appealed the general public to come forward and support the moment.
