Plate Mill department of RSP achieves high output

ROURKELA, Apr 8:  The Plate Mill Department of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has produced 5,00,206 tonnes of plates during 2013-14, registering 13 per cent growth over the corresponding period last year.
The department bagged the Champion of the year trophy for 2013-14 and the trophy was presented by RSP’s CEO G S Prasad in the Annual performance Review and Award function held recently, RSP said in a release today.
By producing 5,00,206 Tonnes of Plates in the year, the plate mill also crossed the landmark of 0.5 Million Tonne production for a year for the first time, it said.
With a rated capacity of 0.3 MTPA, the plate mill of RSP has been utilising more than 100 per cent of its capacity for the past few years on a row now.
This year also saw the mill utilising 167.3 per cent of its rated capacity, it said. Apart from normal plates and special quality plates, the mill also produces defence grade plates which are further processed in the special plate plant.
The mill played an important role in the production of DMR grade plates for use in INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier of Indian Navy. The dedication of the plate mill collective is commendable considering its performance in recent times, the release said.
With the addition of the new facilities like the New Blast Furnace-5 ‘Durga’, and New Caster-3, the production of plate mill has witnessed an upward trend.
The New 4.3 Metre wide Plate Mill coming up as a part of the present modernisation and expansion programme will add a further 0.92 Million Tonnes of finished plates to the product basket of RSP, sources said.
“This additional state-of-the-art mill is likely to take the Department to newer vistas of success”, a source said. (PTI)
