MELBOURNE : Aamir Khan’s PK has become the third Bollywood film in Australia after ‘Dhoom 3’ and ‘3 Idiots’ to grab the spot of a highest grossing foreign film after its spectacular opening last month.
According to the head of local film distributing company Mind Blowing, Mitu Bhowmick lange, ‘PK’ opened on a record 35 screens across the country in December.
“So far only three Indian films have topped as the highest grossing films and all three are Aamir’s movie – 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 and now PK,” Lange said.
“The key thing is to keep in mind is that there are less than 400,000 Indians in total so it’s a great result,” she said indicating that the latest figures indicate that over 100,000 of the population as well as many Australians have watched it.
Commenting on the massive response at Australian box office, PK’s director Rajkumar Hirani said, “The response from the audiences has been very humbling and overwhelming. We are glad that our work has been loved by people across the globe.”
PK also took number one spot on the Christmas Day at the Australian box office.
‘PK’ has performed exceptionally well in India and many international markets, and set new benchmarks in many countries – including in Australia.
The distribution strategy ensured a wide availability in all key centres, augmented capacity via giant screen showcasing and shows even on Christmas Day.
The film has performed phenomenally well – and is now the highest grossing Hindi film for 2014, most importantly the movie has seen an unprecedented growth trajectory, said Amrita Pandey, VP and Head of Marketing and Distribution, Studios, Disney India.
‘PK’ has created a history by crossing the Rs 300 crore figure in India despite protests from Hindu groups. (AGENCIES)
