Pharmacy sealed for selling expired medicine

Srinagar, Sept 1: Authorities today sealed a pharmacy in south Kashmir’s Shopian district after it was found selling expired medicines, triggering outrage among locals.
The matter came to light when a resident, Showkat Ahmad, purchased a prescribed medicine for his 12-day-old infant from the shop, situated near the District Hospital Shopian.
As they were not aware of the fact that the drug had expired, the parents administered it to the infant, after which his eye ailment apparently worsened.
The following day, as per the father, when they went back to the same pharmacy for another pack, he was shocked to find that too had crossed its expiry date.
“This exposes the failure of the Drug Control Department. Many chemists here are driven only by profit at the cost of people’s lives,” the distressed parents alleged, adding that expired drugs had aggravated their child’s minor ailment.
Locals also voiced anger, accusing authorities of negligence in regulating pharmacies. They demanded stern action against the violators.
Meanwhile, officials sealed the pharmacy as an immediate measure. “The shop has been sealed, and further action is being initiated,” officials told ‘Excelsior’.
