People suffer as footbridge collapses

MENDHAR, Jun 20: A long steel-suspension footbridge over a nallah was damaged due to strong winds amid heavy rains in Mendhar area of Poonch district, snapping pedestrians connectivity for hundreds of villagers on the either side of the rivulet.
According to reports the footbridge between Lower Sandote and Lower Dhargloon in Balakot Block of Mendhar Sub Division fell down due to the strong winds and heavy rain today early morning. Villagers alleged that this bridge was at the verge of collapse for the last several months and the concerned department was also informed about it.
Locals of the area including Mohd Javed Khan, Shazad Ahmed Khan, Mohd Farooq Khan, Sheraz Ahmed and others told Excelsior that due to damage to the bridge, there is no safe passage for hundreds of villagers living on either side of the nallah.
Dr Shazad Ahmed Malik, Chairman JKBADC appealed to the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory, Manoj Sinha that the concerned department should be instructed to immediately build a bridge here so that people do not face trouble.
