JAMMU, Jan 1: Expressing their anguish over shifting of wine shops from highway to residential areas, hundreds of people including women held protest at Gumpul and Patta Paloura areas here.
Large number of people including women assembled near the wine shop in Gumpul area of Purkhoo and held protest.
Amid slogans, the protestors also blocked the vehicular movement on the Jammu-Poonch highway, leading to long traffic snarls. They raised slogans and demanded shifting of wine shop to other place and not in their area.
While speaking, one of the protesting women said that opening of wine shop will bring a negative impact on the young generation and spoil the healthy atmosphere of the society.
Another protester said that the problems that are going to be surfaced after opening of the wine shop in their area was brought into the notice of locals leaders and concerned officers, but nothing was done by them, which forced them to come on roads. She said that at any cost the people will not allow for the opening of wine shops in their area.
The residents warned the Government of dire consequence, if wine shop will be opened in their residential area.
Meanwhile, a local namely Parshotam Singh and the employees of the wine shop entered into verbal dual and later a scuffle took place between them and Singh fired three gun shots in the air with his license weapon.
After getting information, police team from Domana police station led by SHO Inspector Rajinder Sharma rushed to the spot and arrested Parshotam Singh. The weapon was also seized by the police and a case under Section 307 RPC has been registered against Singh.
Later, Tehsildar North Javed Iqbal also reached on the spot and ordered closure of the wine shop till further orders.
After the order, the people dispersed and the vehicular movement was restored on the Jammu-Poonch highway.
Meanwhile, the people of Patta Paloura also expressed their resentment over opening of the wine shop in the residential area and held protest.
Later, SHO Domana Inspector Rajinder Sharma and Tehsildar North Javed Iqbal rushed to the spot. Here also, Tehsildar ordered closure of wine shop till further orders and the protesters dispersed peacefully.
