JAMMU, Jan 17: The family members and relatives of a man, who was murdered on January 15 at Sopore, today staged a protest and blocked the road at Nirdosh Chowk in Akhnoor Tehsil demanding compensation.
Around 10 in the morning about 200 people including family members, kin and neighbours of the deceased assembled at Nirdosh Chowk along with the body of the deceased and staged a strong protest. They disrupted vehicular traffic for about two hours leading to long traffic snarls.
The protesting people were demanding compensation for the family of the deceased namely Dev Raj Sharma son of Amarnath Sharma, a resident of village Jhaajjar in Panjgrian area of Akhnoor Tehsil. Dev Raj’s body was brought to Jammu this morning from Sopore.
Dev Raj used to run a dhaba in Sopore and was living in a rented room there at Bafanda complex Shalpora. He was found dead on January 15. He was attacked by the helper at his dhaba identified as Muneer Khan, a resident of Gujarpati, Zaloora, following some argument on payment issue. Police has cracked the case and arrested the accused.
On getting information of protest, a police team of SHO Akhnoor led by Inspector Pushpinder Singh and SDPO Akhnoor, Naresh Singh reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesters but all in vain.       “The protesters were demanding compensation, which is not possibly provided in murder case,” said SHO Akhnoor.
Thereafter, officers of civil administration including SDM Akhnoor, Suresh Sharma and concerned Tehsildar also reached the spot. On their assurance, that a committee will be framed to look into the issue of compensation, the protesters dispersed and traffic was restored on the busy road.
