People protest in Anantnag

SRINAGAR, Oct 12:
Massive protests erupted in a south Kashmir village, about 2 km from Anantnag, after an attempt was made by some unidentified miscreants to set on fire a revered shrine during the intervening night of October 11 and 12.
Official sources said thousands of people took to the  streets at Dabran village, when rumours spread that some miscreants had set on fire the shrine associated with Hazrat Hardi Baba Reshi.
Demanding immediate action against those involved in the crime, the demonstrators alleged that Government has failed to protect the religious places.
Despite gutting of the shrine of Hazrat Peer Dastigir at Khanyar and another more than 100-year-old shrine in the central Kashmir district of Badgam and attempts to damage three other shrines and mosques, the Government has failed to take any security measures, the demonstrators were raising slogans.
However, only matting in the Dabran shrine was damaged in  the fire in the incident.
A senior police officer said an FIR has been registered and an investigation taken up to identify and punish those involved in trying to set on fire the shrine.
Mirwaiz South Kashmir, Qazi Yasir strongly condemned the incident but asked people to remain united.
He said a conspiracy was going on to divide the muslim community. (UNI)
