MENDHAR, July 15: As the township of Mendhar, besides Harni and Gursai were without power supply for the past 24 hours, the local people, irrespective of party affiliation and Beopar Mandal members held strong protest demonstration and staged dharna on Mendhar-Jammu road at main chowk here today.
The people raised barricades at around 9 am and blocked the road, disrupting movement of vehicular traffic. They were shouting slogans against the PDD authorities, Power Minister, Chief Engineer, X-En PDD Poonch, AEE Mendhar besides DC Poonch. Several local leaders and president Beopar Mandal addressed the gathering.
They pointed out that there is total black out in Mendhar, Harni and Gursai. In some areas of Balakote there was power but Mendhar town and many villages were without electricity supply for the past 24 hours and even more. The local PDD officials were least bothered about the matter. With this the banking/ ATM facility and water supply has also been affected.
SDPO and Tehsildar went to the agitating people but they refused to suspend protest. Later, DC Poonch arrived there along with officiating SDM and he summoned the AEE and some other staff members. They assured to restore power by this evening. The people demanded that all the local PDD staff be transferred outside, the Sub Division. On the assurance of DC and Executive Engineer PDD the people then suspended agitation and lifted dharna.
The DC also paid visit to Mendhar-Surankote road and directed the R&B authorities to repair it within two weeks.
