JAMMU, July 24: As Jammu is reeling under worst ever power crisis with State Government and PDD authorities being total mute spectators to the problem, people in several areas continued protest demonstrations and torched effigies of the Government against the unscheduled power cuts and warned to intensify agitation if immediate steps were not taken to solve the issue.
Hundreds of people from Machine -Damana and adjoining villages staged a massive demonstration at Machine Damana and blocked the Jammu- Poonch, Highway this morning in protest against the unscheduled 12 to 14 hour power cuts which they alleged have been facing for last many days.
The protestors also torched the effigies of the Government. Raising slogans against the Government the protestors also blocked Highway for two hours and did not allow any vehicle to pass on the road.
The traffic was only restored on the Highway with the intervention of the Police who assured the protestors that they will take up the issue with the concerned authorities and their problem will be solved.
The protestors also alleged that the power supply remains off for hours tighter during the night and this precedence has been adopted by the PDD authorities for over a week now putting the people to more trouble as they have to pass the sleepless nights. The demonstration was also joined by some Muslims of adjoining villages who accused the Government of not sparing the people of long duration power cuts even in the holy month of Ramzan.
The residents of Barnai, Muthi, Dream City and Darmal held a protest demonstration at Muthi and blocked the Akhoor road this evening in protest against the power crisis. The traffic on busy Akhnoor road was disrupted for about one hour as the protestors squatted on the road and did not allow any vehicle to move.
The demonstration was led by the BJP leader and former Corporator, Omi Khajuria. He alleged that despite the scheduled cuts the power remains off during four to five hours during night putting the people to many hardships. He said the power curtailment has led to the water scarcity in the area as PHE authorities said that they are unable to supply the water due to power cut.
The irate residents of Digaina and adjoining areas held a demonstration at Digiana against the PDD and power cuts. Raising slogans against the Government the people accused it of its total failure in solving the power problem.
Another demonstration was held against the PDD Department at Bantalab with large number of people protesting against the power crisis. The protestors said that the people are facing acute power crisis since the Darbar move and the authorities are not bothered to solve the problem. Even the assurance of Chief Minister to improve power supply proved an eye wash, they alleged.
The irate people of Suchetgarh border belt in R S Pura tehsil also held a massive demonstration against the PDD for increasing power cuts. The protestors including women and children also burnt the effigies of the Government. They alleged that the power crisis has led to water scarcity in the area as well.
The residents of Sharda Colony and Saraswati Vihar Patoli Brahmana also protested against the power and water crisis faced by them in the area for last several days. The residents held the callousness of the PDD and PHE authorities responsible for the problem.
