RAJOURI, Feb 24: The villagers from Banpuri and Bajowal in Sunderbani block held demonstration against the Medical Department for alleged negligence, resulting into the death of young pregnant woman and blocked Jammu-Rajouri road for about an hour today.
The people were protesting against the doctor and other concerned Medical staff of Sunderbani hospital for their alleged negligence in handling the case of a pregnant woman Swarn Lata, wife of Kuldip Raj of village Banpuri. They alleged that doctor and medical staff kept the patient in Sunderbani hospital for nearly four hours and then asked the attendants to take her to GMC Jammu at around 11.30 pm but she died on the way in Akhnoor area while being shifted. The medical staff at Sunderbani wasted time and the death took place due to their negligence, they alleged.
The villagers, relatives and family members after performing last rites of the woman moved to the BMO and narrated the whole matter. They disclosed that lady was under examination of Dr Sunil Sharma (Gyn) at Sunderbani hospital for the last more than two months. He had given delivery date of March 2 but Swarn Lata complained of labour pains at home and was rushed to Sunderbani hospital at around 7.30 pm on Saturday. Dr Sunil started treatment and she was kept in the hospital till 11.30 pm. The doctor then asked to take her to Jammu as her condition was not good but she died on way to Jammu. When she was taken to nearby Sarwal (Jammu) hospital midnight, the doctors declared that she had died about 30 minutes earlier. The body was later taken back to the village.
The BMO Dr Govind Ram Sharma assured that he will hold an inquiry into the matter. Not satisfied by response, the villagers then moved to Jammu-Rajouri road and started protest. They blocked road at around 4.45 pm and started shouting slogans against health staff at Sunderbani hospital. Later, SHO and SDM Nowshera Rajinder Khajuria reached there and pacified the agitating public. They assured inquiry and stern action in this regard if anybody was found guilty. The people then lifted dharna from the road and movement of traffic was allowed.
The doctor concerned, however, claimed that patient’s blood pressure was fluctuating and it could not be managed and therefore, she had to be referred to Jammu.
