LEH, Apr 18: People of Zanskar Sub-Division have decided to boycott the upcoming Parliamentary election if their demand for separate district and separate Assembly seat for Zanskar Sub-Division is not met by the Government.
The decision was taken by all the major stakeholders and most influential associations functioning in Zanskar Sub-Division such as Ladakh Buddhist Association Youth Wing Zanskar (LBAYWZ), Zanskar Muslim Association, All Zanskar Gonpa Association and all Nambardars, during a meeting held under the chairmanship of LBAYWZ president.
The meeting began with opening remarks by LBAYWZ president in which he stressed upon the importance and urgent need for united and sustained fight in order to achieve their demand for separate district and separate assembly seat for Zanskar Sub-Division with its headquarter at Padum.
To support their demand, the speakers said that Zanskar Sub-Division is covering an area of 7000 square kilometers and is located at a distance of 250 kilometres from its district headquarter Kargil. They said such a remote location of a sub-division from its district headquarter and that too remaining cut off for 7 months from the latter, is one of its own kind in whole India.
They maintained that due to remote location of its district headquarter, the people of the region have to suffer a lot on account of administrative and developmental works. “Due to administrative remoteness from the district headquarter, the villages in Zanskar have received fewer roads, secondary schools and health facilities and poor living standards of the people of Zanskar is testimony to this fact,” they added.
