UDHAMPUR, Dec 26: Up in arms against shifting of Degree College Majalta from roadside to interior, a bandh was observed today at Manwal, Battal Majalta, Paldhi, Bharnara, Satrari, Dhaema, Khoon, Balpur and adjoining areas.
On the call given by Jan Aandolan Samiti Majalta, a large number of people from different Panchayats assembled at Battal Morh and staged dharna. They blocked Udhampur-Pathankot Dhar and held a strong protest demonstration against shifting of Majalta Degree College from road side to interior area.
Speaking on the occasion, the Jan Aandolan Samiti leaders claimed that the Higher Secondary School Majalta, which has been chosen as new site for temporary degree college, was already overburdened with more than five hundred students. “In such a situation, if Degree College is also shifted in the same building, how students of new Degree College would be accommodated there?” they asked.
They predicted that decision of shifting college from Baryalta to Majalta would be disastrous for both college and Higher Secondary students and a set back to their career apart from disturbance to their academic arrangements. They demanded shifting of the college at the central place on Dhar road at Baryalta where it was already being run after its creation so that majority of Panchayats, which are located on Dhar road, could be benefitted.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Neeraj Kumar and SSP Shailendra Mishra reached the spot and tried to pacify protesters. The Samiti leaders submitted a memorandum to the administration demanding review of decision to shift degree college within four days.
On the assurance of Deputy Commissioner that the matter would be taken up with higher ups, agitating people lifted their dharna from the road.
