SRINAGAR, June 8: Peoples Revolutionary Forum, (PRF) chairman and veteran Trade Unionist, Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani has sought immediate intervention of DC Ganderbal and Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Kashmir towards the plight of farmers of Safapora and Wakura tehsils of the district who are facing acute shortage of water for irrigating their land.
In a statement issued here, today, Mir said that the paddy fields have turned dry and farmers are in total desperation due to lack of water in irrigation canals in the area.
He said villages of Butwani, Nawabagh, Guzhama, Khanpora, Dhabwakoora, etc are facing acute shortage of irrigation water. He said the farmers have planted the paddy in their fields while others are in a process of the same but all canals have turned dry which has added to the woes of farming community in the area.
He said in case immediate steps were not taken to restore water in the canals the paddy crop in these villages will be totally hit and farmers dependent on the same for their livelihood will be affected.
Mir warned that in case authorities fail to take immediate measures the people of the villages will be forced to come to streets. He also urged the Agriculture Department to issue advisory to farmers suggesting them how to overcome the issue. He alleged Agriculture Department has not taken any initiative in educating the farmers about the Government’s scheme one drop per crop.
