SAMBA, May 17: The people of Jatwal-Panchayat of Sohanda village demonstrated vigorously at the Samba district headquarters over the shortage of drinking water.
A large number of women participated in the demonstration. The women of Sohanda village alleged that drinking water was not available in their village for the last several months. Elderly woman Kanta Devi, who was among the protesting women, said that due to paucity of water, people have been deprived of even bathing, washing and cooking food.
She said that due to paucity of water, the children are unable to take bath for many days. We complained several times to the PHE department officials, public representatives and panchayat members regarding the matter, nobody paid heed to our problems.
People headed by Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Sarpanch Reena Choudhary staged protest in front of the main gate of the office of Deputy Commissioner Samba Anuradha Gupta when they were stopped from meeting her. People raised slogans against the district administration and Jal Shakti Department.
The protesting people said that there is neither any pond nor any canal in their village due to which their cattle are also dying of thirst in this summer. They appealed the Government and the administration that drinking water should be made available to them at the earliest, otherwise they will have to take to the roads.
Many people including Yashpal, Nazir Mohammad, Prakash Chand, Pooja Kumari, Naseem Begum, Santosh Kumari were present in the demonstration.
While assuring the people, the Deputy Commissioner Samba said that from Wednesday, the work of laying pipes from their tubewells to the homes of the people will start and till the pipe laying work is over, the Jal Shakti Department will fulfill their water requirement through tankers.
